It is a critical tool in low-resource settings, as it can keep a patient stable for several hours while they are transported to a hospital or await surgery. How It Works: The garment consists of several neoprene segments that wrap tightly around the legs, pelvis, and abdomen. It functions through three primary mechanisms: 1. Shunting Blood: It compresses the lower body, forcing blood toward the vital organs (heart, lungs, and brain). 2. Reducing Blood Loss: The abdominal segment includes a foam ball that applies direct pressure to the uterus, significantly slowing internal bleeding. 3. Increasing Blood Pressure: By reducing the vascular space, it helps maintain mean arterial pressure. Key Features • Design: Usually made of neoprene with Velcro fasteners. It looks similar to the bottom half of a wetsuit cut into segments. • Ease of Use: It can be applied by non-medical personnel with minimal training. • Stability: Unlike older pneumatic (air-filled) versions, the NASG does not require a pump or gauges and allows for perineal access so medical staff can perform examinations while the garment is on.
